Mobile nativeâs death after procedure at husbandâs Florida plastic surgery clinic under investigation
The death of a 33-year-old woman while undergoing multiple procedures by her husband, plastic surgeon Dr. Ben Brown, is the subject of an investigation by officials in Gulf Breeze, Fla., according to multiple Florida media reports.
Hillary Ellington Brown, a native of Mobile, went into cardiac arrest Nov. 21 during an after-hours procedure being performed by her husband at Restore Plastic Surgery in Gulf Breeze, according to the Pensacola News Journal.
Dr. Ben Brown, a board-certified plastic surgeon, performed multiple procedures on his wife before she went into cardiac arrest.
Information from the Santa Rosa County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office indicates a 911 call was received shortly after 4 p.m. for a woman in distress. Both deputes and EMS units were dispatched to the scene.
WEAR in Pensacola reported that in the 911 call the dispatcher can be heard saying, “The caller reported a female is undergoing a procedure for lipo-fat transfer… cardiac arrest.”
Notes taken during the 911 call include: “DR POSS OVER MEDICATED PATIENT,” the News Journal reported.
Hillary Brown was taken to a Pensacola-area hospital, where she remained in a coma with severe brain swelling from a lack of oxygen. She was removed from life support Nov. 28 and her organs were donated.
A sheriff’s office report indicates a deputy spoke with a technician at the plastic surgery clinic who said Hillary Brown suffered several seizures before going into cardiac arrest.
Both the sheriff’s office Major Crimes Unit and the District One Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the circumstances surrounding Hillary Brown’s death.
“In accordance with our policies and procedures, SRSO investigators frequently conduct death investigations when the death was unexpected or the death occurs under unusual circumstances,” read a statement from the sheriff’s office. “The cause and manner of death is pending the receipt of the autopsy protocol from the District One Medical Examiner’s Office. The autopsy protocol typically takes several months as it usually is dependent on extensive laboratory and toxicology tests as well as the information gathered by our Major Crimes detectives concerning the circumstances of the death.”
Hillary Brown’s parents, meanwhile, said Ben Brown told them he used a different medication on his wife due to regular medication being unavailable.
“He said that the medicine they usually use, they were out of, so he used something different,” Marty Ellington, Hillary Brown’s father, told the newspaper.
Ellington also said his daughter had her husband regularly perform plastic surgery procedures on her face and body and that the two had a “volatile” relationship.
In March, deputies responded to a call regarding a possible suicide at the Brown’s home in Tiger Point Village. According to a report obtained by the News Journal, Ben Brown told the dispatcher his wife as barely conscious after taking an unknown amount of Valium.
A deputy reported Hillary Brown acknowledged taking the Valium, but was not intending to harm herself — only to let her husband know “she was serious.” She was evaluated and released without treatment by EMS personnel, but a deputy determined she met the criteria for the Baker Act and had her transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
Ben Brown has faced a number of complaints relative to botched procedures, the News Journal reported, including an active medical malpractice lawsuit for negligence. In the suit, a woman alleges Brown used “foreign materials” in a breast reconstruction surgery without her consent, causing a serious infection and debilitating complications.
The Florida Department of Health indicates Ben Brown has not had any disciplinary action against him in the last 10 years.
According to his Facebook profile, Ben and Hillary Brown married in June 2022. Hillary Brown had three young children from a previous marriage, while Ben Brown had two sons.
